"Hip-hop is alive in the Islands. What started as an escape for inner city youth living in Bronx, New York has found a great home in the Philippines, celebrated and evolved by the culture’s enthusiasts. The history of hip-hop in the Philippines dates back 35-40 years ago. Afrika Bambaataa said that, he’s seen footage showing Filipinos wearing Zulu Nation shirts break dancing in the 70’s in Tondo, Manila. My cousin Eric who was born and raised in Olongapo, said that there were lots of break dancing crews during the American operation in Subic Bay in the 80′s-90′s. He was a B-Boy himself."
